The wonderful partners of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival – the musicians of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra – recognize Latvia not only as the home of Riga’s Art Noveau district or the place to enjoy the beautiful sunsets of Jūrmala, but also as the land of serious and dedicated classical music performers. The BRSO for more than a decade was led and inspired by on of the all-time greatest Latvian conductors, maestro Mariss Jansons. The recent demise of this phenomenal personality shook the classical music scene like a thunderbolt, leaving great emptiness in the hearts of countless musicians and listeners.
This year the Riga Jurmala Music Festival will honour Maris Jansons, dedicating to his memory conducting masterclasses for young Latvian symphony orchestra conductors. In frames of the masterclasses the young Latvian talents will have an exclusive opportunity to learn the higher secrets of the conducting profession from maestro Manfred Honeck.
The Head of Conducting Department of Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music, professor Andris Vecumnieks says: “The legacy of Mariss Jansons will live through his students – professor of JVLMA Viesturs Gailis, as well as several conductors of middle generation, including Andris Nelsons, Andris Poga and Ainars Rubikis, will continue carrying the name of Latvia into the world. We are extremely grateful for the initiative of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival for aiding our young conducting masters on their first steps towards the highest professional mastery.”
