On August 16th and 18th, the Riga-born, world-famous cellist Mischa Maisky will visit the Dzintari Concert Hall for two concerts. On August 16th he will give a concert of chamber music with his daughter, pianist Lily Maisky, while on August 18th he will perform Saint-Saëns’ Concerto for Cello and Orchestra with the Russian National Orchestra, conducted by Mikhail Pletnev.
On August 7th at 18.30 in the Film noir cafe at the Splendid Palace cinema, the third and this summer’s final RĪGA JŪRMALA Festival Ekselence music club took place. The club was organised in collaboration with the festival partners Food Union, Latvia’s leading dairy processing company, and gourmet ice cream Ekselence.
Latvia is proud of its musical traditions. Like Finland on the other side of the Baltic Sea, it produces a remarkable number of leading conductors and classical musicians for so small a country.
This week, from July 19th to 21st, the new Riga Jurmala Symphony Orchestra Music Festival will begin with five excellent concerts at the Latvian National Opera and Great Guild. The festival is comprised of four mini-festival series: four summer weekends of five concerts including one symphonic music heavyweight—a symphony orchestra. Meanwhile, daytime concerts will include performances by those who have been recognized by the musical press as future stars.
The opening of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival will be marked by a press conference. The press conference will take place on July 19, 11:00, at Grand Hotel Kempinski.
The RIGA JURMALA Music Festival will open this week – 19 and 21 July – with two concerts by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO). Both concerts will be broadcast live on Latvian Radio 3 Klasika, but the concert on 21 July will also be aired on Latvian Television at 22:10 with the generous support of the Foreign Ministry of the Federal German Republic.
A specially assembled youth orchestra, led by burgeoning conductor Arturs Oskars Mitrevics, recorded a welcome video for RJMF guests called “Music is in Our Nature”.
