The second weekend of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival has concluded: Maisky, MILOŠ, Peretyatko, Appl, Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra

Yesterday, August 18th, the second weekend of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival closed with a chamber music concert by baritone Benjamin Appl and pianist Simon Lepper, as well as a concert by the Russian National Orchestra, cellist Mischa Maisky and conductor Mikhail Pletnev.

“The Dzintari Concert Hall is a great venue for summer concerts. The audience for the concert was wonderful, very responsive, wonderfully attentive and insightful. This place has historically been able to attract the highest level of musicians, and I am greatly pleased that the Dzintari Concert Hall—due to this festival—is once again becoming an artistically high-quality concert venue,” explains Russian National Orchestra conductor Mikhail Pletnev when asked of his impressions of the concert.

“The concerts of this weekend once again confirmed that Riga is justified in being placed on the world cultural map, giving visitors the chance to attend and listen to high-quality pieces performed by top musicians,” adds Pāvels Fiļipovs, representative of the Amber Beverage Group, festival supporter and official beverage partner. “Each visitor to the festival was transported for a couple of hours into a magical world, enjoying both world-class concerts and the best local drinks with other culture aficionados in an informal atmosphere. I recommend that those who have not yet had the chance to attend this festival hurry to see what’s on offer next weekend, because there really are only a few tickets left for those concerts.”

Benjamin Appl & Simon Lepper

Attendees of the daytime concert were enthralled by German baritone Benjamin Appl and pianist Simon Lepper’s contribution: a special programme of chamber music, Heimat. This was Appl’s first performance in Latvia. He is described as “the current front-runner in the new generation of Lieder singers.” “It is a long time since I have experienced such ovations after a chamber music concert. The programme: unusual in terms of the parallels between its drama and content, a delicate interpretation of the pieces with intricate lights and darks of vocal tone, perfect style, respect for the material and, of course, inspiration and flight. This is mastery,” writes translator and music critic Olga Pētersone of Appl’s achievements in Jūrmala.
