On August 7th at 18.30 in the Film noir cafe at the Splendid Palace cinema, the third and this summer’s final RĪGA JŪRMALA Festival Ekselence music club took place. The club was organised in collaboration with the festival partners Food Union, Latvia’s leading dairy processing company, and gourmet ice cream Ekselence.
Visitors to the club were able to explore the history of the pieces to be performed on August 25th, the significant life events of their composers, and interpretations in various genres of art. Event visitors had a great opportunity to enjoy Ekselence’s summer hits: delicately cold desserts on a stick in a gentle milk or white chocolate coating.
The lecturer for the evening was musicologist Mikus Čeže, one of the foremost experts in music history and Riga’s music history in particular. The central events of the third weekend of the festival are concerts by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Zubin Mehta with pianist Murray Perahia (24.08) and Yuja Wang (25.08). The concert on 25.08, which will take place at the Dzintari Concert Hall, will include Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. “Both composers have links with Riga: Rachmaninoff had planned to give a concert in our capital city, but was unable to for various reasons, meanwhile Berlioz gave wonderful concerts here, with positive memories of Riga,” emphasizes Čeže.
“We see that the music club has become a favourite and highly anticipated event with its visitors, who give extremely good reviews of the events. It is clear that we will continue to organise Ekselence music clubs going forward,” explains Zane Čulkstēna, Executive director of the festival.
