Today, August 25th, the third weekend of the RĪGA JŪRMALA Music Festival will end with a concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO). Under legendary conductor Zubin Mehta, the orchestra will perform Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with pianist Yuja Wang. A broadcast of the concert will be available exclusively on replay.lv, and at 22:35 on Latvian Television.
The IPO is giving two concerts at the Dzintari Concert Hall as part of the festival. These concerts are historic because conductor Mehta will soon leave the orchestra he has conducted for 50 years. Since it was founded, the IPO has claimed a stable spot among the world’s top orchestras, and they regularly perform in the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals. The orchestra was founded in 1936 by great violinist Bronisław Huberman, while the orchestra was conducted in its inaugural concert by the 20th century legend Maestro Arturo Toscanini. In 1969, Maestro Zubin Mehta was appointed Musical Advisor to the orchestra, becoming its Artistic Director in 1977. Meanwhile, world-famous American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein was made Conductor Laureate in 1988. In 1992, Maestro Kurt Masur was named Honorary Guest Conductor, while in 2011 Gianandrea Noseda became Head Guest Conductor.
Pianist Yuja Wang (1987) makes you believe in miracles – both her elated audiences and critics who have often rated her with six stars out of a possible five are unanimous in this regard. “Her combination of technical ease, colouristic range and sheer power has always been remarkable … but these days there is an ever-greater depth to her musicianship, drawing you into the world of each composer with compelling immediacy,” wrote the Financial Times a year ago.
