The Riga Jurmala Music Festival team consists of industry professionals who all share a dedication and passion for classical music, as well as the strongly-held belief that Riga and Jurmala are the hidden gems of Northern Europe, soon to become the most exciting destinations for classical music connoisseurs.
The artistic board of the Riga Jurmala Music Festival is led by Artistic Director Martin T:son Engstroem and Associate Artistic Director Miguel Esteban. Martin T:son Engstroem obtained his degree in Music History and Russian at Stockholm University. In 1991, he set up what would become the Verbier Festival with its first edition in 1994. He is still its Executive Director. From 1999 to 2003, he was Vice-President of Deutsche Grammophon for the sector “Artists and Repertoire”, from 2003 to 2005 the Senior Executive Producer & Artist Development. Martin T:son Engstroem has served on the juries of numerous competitions, such as the such as the Tchaikovsky Competition and the 50th Paganini Competition in Genoa (2005). He is also a member of several Foundation boards, including the Béjart Ballet and a member of the Governing Board of the Glion Institut de Hautes Etudes.
Associate Artistic Director Miguel Esteban has varied experience in the production and promotion of live events worldwide across various genres, including classical music, staged opera, musical theatre, and more. Born in Los Angeles of Cuban heritage, he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree of Music (Vocal Arts) from the University of Southern California and his Teaching Diploma in Voice from the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève. With Martin T:son Engstroem, he co-founded the Verbier Festival, with which he was associated from 1992-2005, as well as the Verbier Festival Orchestra (1999-2001). From 2001-2011, he was a Director and Senior Client Advisor for UBS Wealth Management in Switzerland, originally recruited to launch the bank’s Sports and Entertainment Group. From 2012-2016, he was Vice President for Artists and Events at Universal Music’s live event subsidiary, U-Live. Since 2016, he is the Chief Operating Officer of Idili Live, a global producer and promoter of all forms of live events. He is Associate Producer of the international productions of Mamma Mia! The Party, an immersive theatrical and dining experience launched by ABBA, as well as of ABBA: Super Troupers, the official international ABBA exhibition.
