Riga Jurmala Music Festival announced today that the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, led by Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons, will make its debut in Riga during the weekend 3 to 5 September 2021. They will offer two concerts of all-Wagner programs at the Latvian National Opera, including Act 1 of Die Walküre with soprano Christine Goerke, tenor Klaus-Florian Vogt and bass Günther Groissböck. To complete this closing weekend of the Festival’s 2021 season, piano legend Maria João Pires will perform a solo recital.

On January 27th, as part of the Rīga Jūrmala Academy’s online masterclasses, local vocalists—students of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music—will develop their singing skills with Benjamin Appl, one of the current generation’s brightest chamber singers. On December 16th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., talented Latvian violinists Daniil Bulayev, Sabīne Sergejeva and Andrejs Jegorovs will perform in an online masterclass with famous French violinist Renaud Capuçon as part of the Rīga Jūrmala Academy. The Riga Jurmala Music Festival announces the 2020-2021 season of the Riga Jurmala Academy, organised in collaboration with the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. Masterclasses in piano, strings, brass and wind instruments, conducting and singing will take place online beginning in December as well as face-to-face in Riga during the scheduled weekends of the 2021 Riga Jurmala Music Festival, to be led by the artists appearing in future or past concerts.
Although Latvia is now back under increased restrictions for the good of public health, the Festival team is looking hopefully towards the future and continues to work actively in anticipation of the summer and the chance to enjoy high-level classical music over four weekends!
